Courtney's Picks (April 2011)

photo Elsewhere
by Gabrielle Zevin

Welcome to Elsewhere. It is warm, with a breeze, and the beaches are marvelous. It’s quiet and peaceful. You can’t get sick or any older. Elsewhere is where fifteen-year-old Liz Hall ends up, after she has died. It is a place so like Earth, yet completely different. Here Liz will age backward from the day of her death until she becomes a baby again and returns to Earth.

This book is a little slow in the begining, but it gets better. I do love this book because it is thought-provoking. It makes you think about all sorts of possibilities that might happen to you after you die.

photo Diary of the Wimpy Kid (Series)
by Jeff Kinney

It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

Courtney recommends this series because...
These books are great because, for starters, they are hilarious. No matter how many times you read them, they never get old. Also, each one is a quick read.

photo The Wednesday Wars
by Gary D. Schmidt

Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn’t like Holling—he’s sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam.

Courtney recommends it because...
This book is very funny, and it is about as far into the fiction section as you can go. This book also gives you an idea of life in 1967.

photo To Be a Slave
by Julius Lester

Readers learn about the lives of countless slaves and former slaves, who tell about their forced journeys from Africa to the United States, their work in the fields and houses of their owners, and their passion for freedom.

Courtney recommends it because...
I liked this book because I learned a lot about slavery and just life in general of the 1800's. It is also good because it is filled with primary sources and interviews of what the slaves actually said.
